Troubleshooting Live Writer

Having trouble with Live Writer recently made me realize how much my world revolves around having a simple, offline blogging tool. I promised my computer, if it helped me fix the problem, just did its part, and quit being a pill.  I would write a little blog post to help others stuck in the same mess I was in. Help did arrive and as promised here it is…a rope for those mired in quicksand. Heave.

Scroll to bottom if your LIVE WRITER has become inexplicably damaged and you have to find another blogging platform helper. There are others.

Surprised?

I was.

1. Can’t link to images, or text, or both.

Most of the time its your Link Glossary giving you fits. Its corrupted. It has to go. I know, you love your auto links and you die inside thinking about replacing them all. Suck. If you want linkability  back ( that is not a word btw, linkability it just sounds like one) you have to be brave and delete the monster you have created and start again.

If you want a copy of your Link Glossary before you delete. Click on start > Run. Then copy/paste   %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\LinkGlossary   press enter. Right Click> Copy>Save to new location.  Open it up in notepad so you can look at the settings you’ll *weep* need to re-enter.  Helpful if you’re planning on putting most of them back right away. Still have to do it by hand though, ( shudder) sometimes it best to just add the ones you really use back as your are blogging. That is the lazy way…my way.

  • Quick Delete Method:
  • Click on start > Run. Then copy this in ” %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\LinkGlossary ” (without quotes), press enter. Right Click. Delete. Your Link Glossary is now deleted. Weep. Close Live Writer, re-open. Hopefully you have a fix.  If not, see 5.

  • Navigate to File Delete Method:
  • Open Live Writer>Tools>Options>AutoLinking>Highlight All Links> Delete. Your Link Glossary is now deleted.
  • Weep. Close Live Writer, re-open. Hopefully you have a fix.  If not, see 5.

2. Live Writer won’t start. Error Message…Sorry Live Writer has encountered a problem and has to close…

  • Quick Delete Method:
  • Click on Start>Run.
  • On Vista,  copy/paste    %AppData%\Windows Live Writer\Keywords
    On XP,  copy/paste    %UserProfile%\Application Data\Windows Live Writer\Keywords
  • Delete all files beginning with “keyword”
  • Close Live Writer, re-open. Hopefully you have a fix. If not, see 4.

3. Live Writer Crashing.

This is a registry issue.  Go here.

4. Live Writer won’t start, #2  no help.

This is a registry issue.  Go here.

5. If all else fails…Un-install/Repair.

Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Un-install. You have a choice here to Repair or Un-install. Try Repair. Then try Un-install. You will have to Re-Start your computer with either one and they take about the same amount of time. Go make a sandwich and take a pee. It will be a few minutes.
