Harvey P. Waterworks aka Harvey Poo-Bucket has left us.
We have a hole in us easily seen through.
Our memories of our cheeky poo-bah are marked with his big voice and constant needs for attention. On his worst day he would get up and walk across the room if someone was hugging. He HAD to get in on that! He was ours from the moment we started fostering him at 8 months. He chose us and every adoptathon we went to he acted like a wild thing so no one would adopt him. Put him back in the car and he was his old self again. He was already a veteran vet visitor when he came, having undergone numerous surgeries and he underwent many more before it was his time to go. He was always a sweet boy even when he was being bossy. You wanted him to stop barking stick your hand in his mouth and he would put on the brakes before ever touching your hand with his teeth. Even as weak and brittle as his bones were he could have hurt us if he wanted but he never wanted to and he went through alot just to stick around with us. Meds, supplements, vets, surgeries you name it he tackled it.
He never ran right, he never walked right, but he didn’t know that. He was KING of his world, the superhero, Captain Flydog ( in a navy blue bra) for all he knew and he never gave up until two days ago. He had a giant spirit he drew from that just wouldn’t allow him to act disabled. Every vet we saw, first said he wouldn’t live long, then marveled at how long he had already lived or that he was walking at all. We were often counseled to euthanize him for his own sake and because he was mostly incontinent, for our sakes as well.
We contended it wasn’t over until Harvey said it was over and he said goodbye to us on Tuesday so we took him for one last car ride.
Nathan and Harv-ard Sleeping
Because of his digestive problems he was on a strict diet, and no people food whatsoever so he was constantly counter-surfing and sticking his head in wastebaskets… it was “Harvey Off” “Harvey Leave It” and he always had something to say back, it sounded alot like “ How Dare You”, three quick barks. He walked like a folded up lawn chair but yet he could sneak up on your unattended coffee or tea, get his giant Great Dane tongue down in there and slurp it all up leaving nothing for you but backwash and oh, yes, coffee splatters all over your important papers! But he was long gone by the time you came round to clean up the damage! In his chair pretending to sleep or actually sleeping! LOL! Of course it would put him into a tail spin of sickness and explosive diarrhea, but he never stopped “shopping” for people food no matter what the payback. He once ate an entire bag of Hershey’s kisses. I was sure he would be dead for that, but other than pooping tin foil for a week he made it just fine. You know, now that I think about it, whenever I thought he did something that for sure was the end – nothing happened. HOOT!
no more camera, mommy
He was first given 18 months, he lived past that, then 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, he nearly made it to 6. He was born on Earth Day, April 22, 2004, but he was no hippie, actually he HATED the out of doors. He refused to lay on the grass outside, so he had a piece of carpeting he dragged around to lay on. I fashioned a rope curl to it with a knot on the end so he could get a better grip on it in his later years, but he stopped using it as soon as I did that! LOL! He much preferred his big comfy chair or the leather couch, Okay, any couch! LOL! If he went outdoors it was never alone. He had to have a people right there with him or he wouldn’t step across the threshold. Many nights he would wake me to go potty and I would stand in cold or the heat, looking up at the beautiful stars, the ones I would never have seen without Harvey. Some nights he didn’t wake me and I cleaned poop the next morning. I learned I much preferred star gazing.*wink*
Bring forth my Righteous Doggie Chair, peasants!
Some might say we made him this way, spoiling him and such and I would agree to a part, but by design or by our treatment there is no doubt Harvey was a sticky, spoiled, happy mess and I would do it all again. I would buy more blankets, sofa covers, Fabreeze and baby wipes and I would have insisted he let us clean his ears more often, but otherwise I would not change a thing. It was a glorious ride and he was worth every minute of sacrifice. He gave us 2 laughs for every poop so it was a fair trade.
So raise your next cuppa to Harvey P. Dane!
A toast: “May you all be blessed with a bit of Harvey in your life, may you never give up just because everyone else thinks your doomed, its over when you say its over! May you always have a soft place ( like a big comfy doggie chair) to land.”
I leave you with Harvey’s favorite quote.

Well, you already know I love this LO, but reading the story behind it has been the high point of my day. As a board member of the Humane Society I deal with sad stories of so called ‘flawed’ animals daily. Harvey was truly blessed to be found by you and your family. What a wonderful tribute to a magnificent animal!

And THANK YOU Vicki for the work of the Humane Society. What important work you do! Life and Life work.

Beautiful, just beautiful. I’ve never seen a better written eulogy, human or pet. I understand your heartache we lost our Polly, an Australian Shepard, 4 years ago now, and part of me still aches for her. Thank you for sharing this with us. I love the layout too.
